This photo was taken in my home office, which is my favorite room to photograph in because of how much natural light filters in. I am a self-taught photographer and am constantly looking to improve my photography and my understanding of light.Time
This photograph was taken in March of this year around 3:00 in the afternoon. This is the time of year when the weather keeps me inside and I can spend hours experimenting with lighting and set ups to achieve the look that I am envisioning. This is one of my favorite photographs because the final image is exactly how I had it pictured in my mind, which does not always happen.Lighting
Lighting is so important. It can change the mood entirely of your image. I use only natural light for all of my photography. When shooting indoors, I often use the light coming in from the windows in combination with black foam core boards to help direct the light to exactly where I want it to fall. I also like to use sheer curtains on the windows to help diffuse the light coming in.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 60D using my favorite 50-mm f/1.8 STM lens. No other equipment was used other than my favorite well-loved, well-used cookie sheet. I love the texture and color it adds provides as a backdrop to my food photography.Inspiration
I love the look of dark/low light food photography. To me, it gives food an artistic, moody feel that draws you in. I am inspired by other photographers and am continually striving to improve my skills. I love looking through cookbooks, magazines, Intstagram, and of course, Pinterest for inspiration. Cooking and baking for my family brings me joy, so food photography is the perfect way for me to combine both of my passions.Editing
I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 for all of my post-processing. The actual post-processing for this particular photo was minimal. I am learning that if you get the lighting right while shooting, very minimal post processing is usually needed. In my camera bag
Right now, my camera bag has my Canon 60D in it along with my three favorite lenses: the Canon 50 mm f/1.8 STM lens which I used for this shot, a Canon 75-300 mm f4-5.6 III, and a Canon 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II. This gives me a nice variety for almost every situation. I am never without my camera because I never know when or where I will be inspired.Feedback
My advice for others is to experiment to find what speaks to you. I have a large collection of assorted plates, bowls, and silverware that I bring out of the cupboards to play around with and see what works best for each set up. I love vintage pieces, which add a little history and texture to the shot. I know that if something doesn't work, it's okay. At least, I can always eat after a photoshoot, no matter how the photograph turns out.
