Behind The Lens
Location
The shot was taken at Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver, BC, looking south-west toward downtown Vancouver.Time
Sunsets are often spectacular from this view-point, with the blazing sun burning the city's skyline into a silhouette against the crimson sea.Lighting
The sky was that perfect semi cloudy we love so much, with violent winds hinting at a storm to come. I used a long exposure to get the dreamy clouds and the steel-like water.Equipment
This was shot on a Samsung NX10 with 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens with a Hoya PROND1000 neutral density filter attached, and of course on a tripod.Inspiration
I see this skyline everyday and this particular view almost ten times a year. From this location, the city looks so far and serene. All the hubbub of those busy downtown streets is drowned in the tranquil hymn of the small waves on the sea. It is a great place for just sitting on a bench and thinking. When the sun sets, the cityscape slowly turns into this beautiful charred outline of itself. No streetlights, no bright windows, only a shadow.Editing
The photo was processed to look more surreal. Curves were used to emphasize the burning sky even more against the black silhouette, and bring out the reflections on the water. In my camera bag
I usually pack my Samsung NX1 (yes, upgraded since!) with its spectacular NX 16-50m f2-2.8 S lens. I try to keep things light. If I'm expecting a good photo opportunity, I pack my wide angle lens (Samsung NX 12-24mm f4-5.6) and my little pancake (30mm f2) as well.Feedback
It is great to travel and get those shots you always dream of, but there is beauty in what we see everyday. You just need a little patience and a fresh outlook.
