Location
This was captured during an early morning drive through the farms and foothills outside of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee.Time
Early in the morning while I was scouting locations to capture the sunrise, I came across this perfectly crooked barn.Lighting
There is a high dynamic range of lights and darks in this scene. With the sun's brightness reflecting off the clouds and atmosphere and the barn's face in the shadows, it required capturing several bracketed exposures to bring out the details in the shadows.Equipment
This image was captured using a Canon 5D Mark III with a EF17-40mm f/4L lens. Steadied with a Promaster XC525C Carbon Fiber Tripod and a Photo Clam PG-2EPQR Pro Ball Head.Inspiration
I was in search of beautiful rustic Tennessee barns that are scattered around the outskirts of the Great Smoky Mountains.Editing
Due to the dynamic range of the scene and resulting images, the processing required blended 5 exposures in Adobe Lightroom and making some adjustments to bring back the details of the light and shadow areas. There were a few minor touch-ups to remove dust spots, but otherwise the image is as seen. I made the final tweaks using Nik Software's Color Efex Pro and some custom presets I've developed over the years. In my camera bag
I like to travel as light as possible and only carry the tools necessary. In order to do so, I went with a relatively small bag to force myself into only carrying what I need. I have a Lowepro Flipside Sport 10L AW packed with a Canon 5D Mark III. For lenses, I carry a Canon 17-40mm f/4L, a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L II, a Canon 2x Extender. Those lenses provide the wide angles and plenty of zoom for detail captures. For accessories, I carry several filters (B+W polarizer, B+W UV, B+W 10-stop neutral density), 4 batteries, and 200GB+ in Compact Flash cards.Feedback
Typically I would suggest seeking out a location and waiting for the right light. As with most landscape photography, patience is very important. However, this capture was a very last moment decision. I quite literally jumped out of the car and ran to setup before the colors in the sky faded. Sometimes that's just how it goes when you find a subject at just the right time! Otherwise, I recommend scouting out locations mid-day and find interesting scenes. Imagine what they may look like at different times of the day. Carry a compass and plan for where the sunlight will be at in the morning and in the evening. Pay attention to the weather forecasts and plan to go even if it might be poor weather. Oftentimes it adds atmosphere and drama to the scene, which in turn makes your image even more unique and challenging for others to attain.
