Behind The Lens

Location

Just out from Sinalei Reef Resort in Upolo, Samoa

Time

I was on the island celebrating my fathers wedding. Late afternoon the day before was scorching hot and we decided to go for a snorkle off the end of the wharf and I lucked out seeing this beautiful sea urchin.

Lighting

Because the tide was mostly out, the urchin was only in a few feet of water and let the natural sunlight filter through.

Equipment

A cheap hand held point and shoot camera in a water proof case.

Inspiration

I had been taking photos of a small reef fish sharing a hole in the sea floor with a crab who was getting rather defensive. The current pulled me a short distance away and I caught sight of the urchin in the corals. I just loved the earthy tones of the camouflage.

Editing

The photo is completely unedited.

In my camera bag

As I am still a beginner I have just started experimenting with my Nikon S3200 with a 50-200mm lens.

Feedback

The correct tide is going to be a huge help in photographing reef inhabitants. Too far in and not only do you loose the light but it becomes harder to stabilise the image when you are free diving down. Too low and many creatures venture further into the rocks. Unfortunately this reef was completely destroyed by Hurricane Evan in 2009 along with the resort and caused lose of life. The resort has now rebuilt but the reef will take much longer to regenerate.
