I took this photo of the kooikerhondje puppies in the breeders backyard. They wanted some photos of them before they sent them to their forever homes.Time
This was one of my favorite photos of the shoot. It was early in the evening and I had been following the 8 puppies around for some time as they ran and played. They were beginning to settle down for the night when I took this shot of them in their wagon headed back to the kennel.Lighting
The sun was setting rather quickly at this point of the shoot. I didn't want to risk getting "glowing puppy eyes" by using a flash, so instead I bumped my ISO to 1600 and was able to bring in enough light to capture the little guy chillin' on his wagon ride.Equipment
This was shot hand held using my Nikon D600 along with my Nikon 55-300mm lens.Inspiration
The puppies had been playing for a while and were beginning to tire so the owner loaded them in a wagon and headed back to their kennel. This little guy just seemed so relaxed and happy and the expression on his face was to priceless not to capture.Editing
These little fellas just had the cutest expressions on their faces so I cropped out their brothers and sisters to make them the main focus and I auto adjusted the white balance to show off their markings a little better. In my camera bag
If someone were to take a peek into my camera bag they will almost always see my Nikon D600 and Sigma 70-200mm lens. This is my go-to combo and I use it 90% of the time. Sometimes I will throw in my Nikon nifty fifty for some portraits or my Nikon 55-300mm when I travel. I also have my Tamron 60mm macro lens when I feel like getting up close and personal with some insects and the Tamron 150-600mm when the birds are singing my name!Feedback
My main advice for capturing puppies, or anything really, is remembering to observe your subject and it's surroundings before you start photographing. I took a little time to watch the puppies and their behavior before I even took the first photo. I watched them as they played and noticed which ones had the best personality. I then scoped out my surroundings to make certain the background looked nice and then kept a watchful eye on the amount of natural light that was quickly disappearing. Whether your photographing puppies or people, flowers or food, you have to be very observant.
