They don't call it the golden hour for nothing you know ;) I was stood in a brilliant patch of glowing mist recently thinking it would look better with a deer in it. Then look what came along!

Location
I took this photo in Richmond Park, not far from Pen Ponds car park. It used to be one of my favourite locations until I moved away.Time
This was daft o clock in the morning. I got out of bed much earlier than I needed to. As I finally walked into the park, light was beginning to creep up over the horizon. As I moved into the park, I spotted other photographers with tripods, appearing as silhouettes in the mist. After taking this picture, I observed many other photographers effectively corralling deer around the park by going where their brothers and sisters in arms appeared to be interested. This was the first time when I realised the influence of a group of photographers on one animal and felt pretty bad about it. I didn't enjoy seeing it and realised that in meetup groups I've been part of that problem before, disturbing that which I have come to see. I have not been out in a group for a very long time now.Lighting
The light is all natural, coming from the Sun, passing through thick mist early-morning. I really like this kind of soft lighting, especially with desaturated colours. The Internet is full of hyper-saturated images.Equipment
My trusty Canon 7D and a 70 - 200 mm f/4L lens. I did have my Manfrotto tripod with me but was not using it for this shot.Inspiration
I was actually interested in taking a snap just to come back to on another occasion. I regularly take photos just so that I can remember where an interesting scenario may play out in future. On this occasion, as I was thinking a stag would improve the scene, one appeared!Editing
It has been cropped and enhanced slightly in post. I have effectively dodged the sunlight and warmed the scene a little from the original white balance. Additionally I have darkened the silhouette of the stag to allow him to pop out of the scene. In my camera bag
A camera, possibly two lenses, some food, some water. Possibly a jumper if it's cold. That and spare batteries, spare memory card, and a lens cleaning pen. Certain locations I take a tick removal tool just in case, plus antiseptic wipes. If it's cold I may have a flask of tea or coffee.Feedback
Watch the weather forecast, be prepared to get up early, take a flask of something, know the location you are shooting at before you go there.
