I took this photo in the bathroom of my tiny studio apartment near Automobile Alley in Oklahoma City. Looking back now, I can't help but smile. The place was very--very small. I do miss it at times; it is where, "chasing my dreams," happened. No worries, I still chase dreams; I have married my miracle Mikki. I will pursue my other dreams with her and of course my camera. I do remember calling myself a photographer for the first time with confidence in that tiny place.Time
I remember it being very late, of course I had way to much to drink. At least a pot of coffee before I took the camera out of the bag. Main lightbulb was out in the living room, so dark.Lighting
The lighting was a challenge. I was shooting directly into the mirror. I did not want any light from a flash bouncing back at me...I wanted a clean shot. So I worked with what I had. No flash, weak light and a mirror. Pfft....I got this. (Thanks for the question. Reminiscing is a real pleasure)Equipment
My Cannon T3i and my favorite lens....I'm hoping it was my 50mm. I do remember swapping back and forth with my kit lens. Did I mention the bathroom was small.Inspiration
This is where I said to my self, "Well ugliefrog!? Where is your self portrait for the viewbug contest!!? All photographers have self portraits." Understand.. I do not like pictures of my self. Others yes, me--no way! I do not like them Sam I am.(Ugliefrog isn't just a clever handle) I pushed myself to do two things. Self portrait (everybody has them) and really put myself out there. A photo contest with my face. I was going to have to make the leap, (insert smile) sometime.Editing
Lightroom. I did not do anything special or time consuming. I remembered I wanted to get out of Lightroom and entered into the contest before I chickened out.In my camera bag
My trusty t3i, my nifty 50 and my iPad.Feedback
Have confidence, really--really trust yourself. Do not overthink it--take the shot and move forward. Don't forget to smile...it helps. I had a contest to enter, a shot I did not want to take, and plenty of excuses. So what did I do. I went for it.
