Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a little country town zoo in the southern part of NSW, Australia. I spent two days at the zoo and this photo was one of the first wildlife shoot I have ever taken.

Time

this photo was taken at around 9am on my second day at the zoo. I had visited them in the late afternoon of the previous day and couldn't resist hanging out with the big cats again.

Lighting

The lighting at that time in the morning was soft as it was winter in Australia at the time and quite overcast.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 700d with the Canon 70-200mm f4 USM II lens and was handheld.

Inspiration

I love animals and started last year as an underwater photographer. I feel in love with this art form very quickly and decide to spend a weekend indulging both my passion for photography in a new land based incarnation and my love of animals at the same time.

Editing

I used Photoshop to turn the image from colour to black and white and was captivated by the outcome as the lack of colour allows the eye to be drawn straight to his eyes.

In my camera bag

on this shoot I also had a Sigma 150-500mm lens. I also always have my Canon 100mm macro prime lens.

Feedback

The key with animal photography is to have your camera set to Apature Priority, making sure you keep the shutter speed around 1/300 at least. The other key is to wait, wait, wait for the right shot and be ready to take it when it presents itself.
