Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in South Western Wisconsin off a stretch of Wisconsin 35. The Mississippi river and its beautiful bluffs and Lake Pepin are not far away.

Time

Part of a foggy morning sunrise on a quiet Sunday morning, around 8 AM in August.

Lighting

The all natural light of the early morning sunrise and low lying fog helps add to the depth and dimension of the photo. The lights reflection on the Silo and fence line give a sense that it will not be long before the mornings activities start.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon EOS Rebel T4i and my Canon 70 - 300mm lens. No flash, handheld, 70mm focal point with settings at 1/160th of a second, f/20, and ISO of 100.

Inspiration

I grew up in the city of Minneapolis but often vacationed in parts of rural Wisconsin. I am often drawn to return to the rural areas for the beauty, peace, and serenity of the country side. I am fortunate to be able to make it a beautiful day drive at only the expense of my time and gas. My sister and I have done this drive together a couple of times and love to explore the beauty of the back roads and share our love of photography.

Editing

I was fortunate that this shot did not need too much processing. It was slightly underexposed but basic adjustments in Lightroom brought it around for lighting and I also did some processing in Perfect Photo Suite 9 to bring out detail and emphasis in some areas.

In my camera bag

I currently pack a Canon 6d body along with my Canon T4i. I also bring along my Canon ES 70 - 300mm lens, a Tamron 50 mm lens, a Canon EF 24-105mm lens and a newly acquired Tamron Wide Angle SP 15 - 30mm lens. I also make sure I have plenty of battery power along with chargers and an speed light that I need to make better use of. Oh and plenty of SD cards as well. I also pack a shutter release for those more challenging times when a tripod is necessary.

Feedback

Clean your lenses, charge your batteries, pack your camera bag with a variety of lenses if possible. Sunday mornings are great for grabbing shots in areas that might otherwise be heavy with weekday traffic. In the midwest, Spring and Fall give you the best chances to catch the low lying fog or lake mists when the temperatures are fluctuating with greater degree between day and night, the ground and water. Bring protective gear, bug spray, flashlights, sunscreen and a small cooler with drinks and snacks if going for an extended drive. Have fun and enjoy the magic.
