Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot in bostons Christian Science Plaza with views of the Prudential building and the reflecting pool. I spent over a half hour positioning to get a clean view of bostons skyline with the smooth reflection of the reflecting pool in the foreground. This area is beautiful at night and well lit for some interesting architectural shots.

Time

This was shot at the very end of the sunset just as the city lights were coming on and the sky was getting dark. I waited for it to get dark enough that I could lengthen the exposure enough to blur the running water in the reflecting pool and capture the contrast of the city lights against the sky.

Lighting

The lighting in the plaza is nicely balanced for evening shots and a set of light posts behind me helped light up and define the outer edges of the reflecting pool in the foreground. This was shot with a 30 second exposure to smooth the texture of the water and help remove unwanted movement in the frame.

Equipment

I use my trusty canon 600d with 10-22 lens to get the really wide angle I was going for. The long exposure required I use a tripod which I set down low to get both the ground plane and the buildings in view.

Inspiration

I walk by this spot several times a week and regardless of the time of day it always has beautiful and interesting views. I really wanted to capture the beauty of the city at dusk and couldn't think of a better place that embodies both the cityscape and the beauty of a well known Boston hot spot.

Editing

I took this picture with the intention of turning it into a black and white shot in post. The scene was beautifully contrasted right off the sensor and most of the post processing went into balancing the greyscale tones to bring out the values as I saw them in the moment.

In my camera bag

I am an avid outdoorsman and my photography gear reflects my need for a light and portable kit that suits any situation I come across. My typical gear consists of a gripped canon 600d, canon 10-22, 24-105 f4L and 70-200 f4L IS. These three lenses cover most of the range I need and along with a 50 1.4 provide me a well rounded shooting experience. I also carry a manfrotto 190xb tripod with ball head, several B+W filters and a canon 430EXII flash unit. All of this fits inside my Lowepro AW 200 camera bag with room for water, food and extra gear for long nights and day hikes.

Feedback

Don't settle for the first composition. Try out many different angles and think carefully about what your trying to capture in the picture I usually spend a good amount of timer tying different angles and views before setting up my tripod and exposing the shot. For night shots like this one use your lowest ISO setting and a long exposure to get the most detail and keep the shadow noise to a minimum. Most of all have fun with it!
