Location
This photo was taken in the woods near my husbands old house. It was where I shot a lot of my portfolio in college and where I got most of my inspiration.Time
This shot was done after a long day of shooting and not feeling inspired. I was ready to quit and go home until, as my husband and I were walking out of the woods, I spotted a bright red leaf and had to take a picture of it. I ask my husband to hold it up for me and as the light was shining through it, I imagined the leaf breaking up and floating away.Lighting
It was nearing sunset and the light was shining through the leaf, showing all its veins.Equipment
This was a very simple shoot, considering it was very last minute. All I had in my hand was my Canon Rebal T3i and I believe it was the kit lens. No tripod, no speedlight, nothing.Inspiration
I was inspired by the bold red of the leaf and how it jumped out from amongst all the brown and yellow leaves on the ground.Editing
The post processing, though it may look difficult, was very simple. This image is only a combination of two images: one of the the hand beneath seaming to levitate the leaf, the leaf being held up by two fingers at the very edge of the stem. I cut out the leaf using the pen tool, copied the layer, stretched it out over the original image, and masked it out to only reveal particles. Also, masking out the hand holding the leaf to show the hand underneath allowing the leaf to levitate. In my camera bag
My bag doesn't have to much in it, just my Canon T3i body, a sigma 10-20 for shooting interior photography, a Sigma 50mm for portraits, and a Canon 600 speedlight for that extra lighting.Feedback
Try try to think outside the box when duplicating this technique. Many photographers have done very similar styles and it becomes monotonous. Try subjects that others wouldn't think of like plants or other interesting things.
