Really cool and cute Melissa,
Nice contrast, great filled black border around it. The only thing that I would have liked to see is that the Frame of the window was sharp as well. But that's maybe more a matter of taste. Anyway, fantastic job Melissa, great start of your gallery on viewbug and welcome to the community. I hope you feel right at home :)

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken in Kansas City Union Station. The entire building is full of beautiful unique architectural details like this window.

Time

We had just visited the science museum located in the building and were on our way to lunch. It was close to midday, but the sun had cleared the building enough that we had some light spilling in the window.

Lighting

I wanted to highlight the window shape and without blowing out or losing any of the detail. I also wanted to draw the eye to his face, so I exposed darker than usual to drop most of the photo into shadow with just touches of light on his profile and the leading lines of the window leading to his face.

Equipment

This is shot with my Canon 5D Mark iii and my 35.

Inspiration

He always has a notepad with him, whether it's for drawing or writing. He has a wildly inspiring imagination and he records those thoughts throughout the day. I wanted to capture one of his moments of inspiration while he was framed with architecture that was equally inspiring and unique. I love that the window also provided leading lines to his face and how the light coming through the window provided less obvious leading lines that draw the eye from window to face to his hand.

Editing

The wall around the window caught some of the highlights, but I wanted all of the focus to stay on the window and the boy, so I took away all of the detail by dropping the shadows everywhere but where I wanted the eye to go.

In my camera bag

When I am on one of these adventures with my kids, I have learned my lesson to travel light or my back and shoulders pay for it. When I can only choose one lens, I choose my Canon 24-70 because of its versatility.

Feedback

Always have your camera with you, whether it's on the nightstand, in your purse or bag, or slung over your shoulder. You never know when the perfect moment or light or subject will greet you, so you want to always be prepared. I wear my camera so much that I don't even notice except when it's NOT there.
