Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a reservoir outside Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. This bridge was built by the Japanese who had a large influence on the development of Kaohsiung Harbor.

Time

It was late in the afternoon - a friend and I wanted to exercise after lunch. We wanted to rent bikes at the reservoir, but only one bike was available! As my friend rode the bike, I jogged alongside her and took pictures. This photo was taken at about 4 in the afternoon.

Lighting

The strong sun was shining brightly from the West. In Taiwan, I always have to be careful to wear more sunscreen - the sun is much more intense than my home in Chicago! I'm learning how to take advantage of this strong natural lighting in my photography.

Equipment

This photo was shot with a Nikon COOLPIX P7700. This is my go-to camera when I go sight-seeing near my hometown. I did not use a tripod or flash - the sun did the work for me!

Inspiration

Since living in Taiwan, I've seen dozens of bridges all across the island. This one was unique, though. With the Japanese influence, it seemed to have a quiet simplicity and strength. I also liked the shadows on the bridge at that time of day, and the contrast of the land close to the lens on the right and distant on the left.

Editing

I decided this photograph looked better in b&w. It took away some distractions of faint color and helped reflect the simplicity of this quiet reservoir.

In my camera bag

As an amateur photographer, I'm still learning how to use all the features of my COOLPIX. I didn't even have a bag for this little day trip, because we really went to the reservoir for the exercise.

Feedback

I recommend going somewhere where there are less people. As I was taking photographs at this reservoir, a few people would stop me and try to use English to see if I truly appreciated the beauty of this reservoir. They took a lot of pride in the beauty of this quiet spot outside the busy city. Find places where locals find peace and pride. There are bound to be beautiful compositions waiting there!
