Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a sleepy lakeside town in Bayview, Idaho. It is a place I like to call home during the summer months.

Time

This was taken in the morning. I remember every window was open, the lake breeze and cool of the morning flowed through the house, preparing the room for the summer heat that was to come.

Lighting

This room is encased with windows, flooding the room with natural light. I love how the light highlights and brings attention to my Grandpa.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D3100 with a f/4.5 aperture, 400 ISO and 1/500 shutter speed.

Inspiration

My Grandpa was going through the beginning stages of Alzheimer's, which is what brought me to the lake that weekend. I had tried getting some shots of him with my Dad but my Grandpa was being stubborn when I asked him to smile for the camera. We were sitting in the living room when I looked up and saw my Grandpa looking out on the lake, he had this beautiful expression of peace and enjoyment on his face. I knew it was a moment I wanted to capture forever.

Editing

Originally, the photo was full of colors and contrast- the walls bright white, my grandpa’s shirt blue, and the chair a red checkered. I processed the photo in black and white to remove any distractions that kept the main focus from my Grandpa and the emotion so clearly displayed on his face.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D3100 with my 200mm lens, 18-55mm lens and 35mm lens . I always make sure to have an extra memory card and an extra (fully charged) battery. I have been that rookie whose camera died mid-hike and definitely learned my lesson.

Feedback

When looking to capture images of people, be prepared to capture the moments that cannot easily be created. People can always be posed to take a “good” photo but I live for candid shots. Those unexpected snapshots of people’s lives are the most intriguing and memorable. With that being said, always make sure you have your camera ready and on the correct settings. This way you are not fumbling around when you see something special that you want to capture.
