Location
This photo was taken in Inverness, California, which is about 50 miles south of San Francisco. It is situated on the Tomales Bay in the Point Reyes National Seashore.Time
This photo was taken sometime in the early afternoon. A friend of mine wanted to take me to the Point Reyes lighthouse and an abandoned barn that she knew about, but we stopped for a bite to eat in Inverness. The only restaurant there happened to be closed on that day and the only place that had food was a market/deli. I was hoping we might have time to stop for a bit as I was admiring the clouds and sky reflecting off the absolutely still water in the lakes and ponds we drove past on our way up. As we were waiting for our food to be ready, my friend said to me, "Oh, there's some old boat out behind the building if you want to take a picture of it." I walked out there and saw this amazing sight and couldn't stop shooting. It was just a case of being in the right place at the right time.Lighting
This was shot with all natural lighting.Equipment
I shot this handheld with a Nikon D90 and a UV filter.Inspiration
When I saw this view as I walked on the trail behind the deli, I was simply amazed and I knew I wanted to capture it as naturally and as beautifully as my eyes were viewing it. I shot this boat with so many different compositions and angles, I'm surprised I didn't try to get on the boat and shoot that as well.Editing
For this photo, I processed three different exposures in Photomatix but did not want a completely overdone look. I then used Photoshop to adjust some highlights, curves and contrast. In my camera bag
I typically carry more than I will actually use on a shoot and that's because I have found myself on several occasions wishing I had a different lens to shoot something I saw at the time. I usually have my Nikon D7100 and/or my D7000 along with my 18-105mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm lens as they are the ones I tend to shoot with most often.Feedback
I read an article once about composition bracketing and I challenge myself to shoot subjects with different compositions so I can review them later and decide which one I like best. Often times, I find that my second or third composition turns out to be much better than my first one. I would also suggest patience. While it is not a strength of mine by any means, waiting until you have the right composition to take the shot or waiting for the tourists to finish looking before moving on can save lots of time in post processing.
