Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo, on the North shore of Oahu, one of the Hawaiian islands. There were some large sets(waves) coming in so it made the perfect environment for this image. We had to sit and wait for the white wash of the waves to push its way up the shore to hit us.

Time

I took this at around 6:30 pm. The sun was low and it was around sunset so it created this beautiful warm light that gave a really nice feel to the photo. The angle of light made for both soft and slightly hard shadows, which I think add depth to the image.

Lighting

In this image is all natural light. No reflector, no flashes, just the sunlight. I am glad that I didn't complicate things with any extra equipment because I might have missed this moment if I was fiddling with something else. As I am young and just out of high school I am only shooting natural light because I am still trying to save money for lighting equipment. I think later on when I am able to get my lighting gear it will be an amazing experience because I will be able to create light and shape it, rather then just rely and use only natural light, but for now I will continue to explore and shoot all natural.

Equipment

I shot this image with my Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 50mm f/1.4. Nothing else was used for this shot.

Inspiration

My friends and I came to the beach to surf, body surf, body board, and take pictures. I was shooting my friends surfing and body boarding, but they could only catch a couple waves out of the good ones because a lot of people were in the water. I had already caught some good images of my other friends and I didn't want to waste the light and my other friend(the one in the picture) was sitting with me on the beach so we decided she would play model and I could get some new portraits. I changed my camera and lens and we walked down the beach, threw out some ridiculous and hilarious pose ideas, and tested them out. Then I asked her to try this one(the one in the image) and I caught the sequence and it was awesome. Even through the little lcd screen I could tell that this image was one the the best from the day.

Editing

I am not very experienced at post processing but I try my best. I purchased Capture One Pro 7 for my raw conversions and I've had Adobe Photoshop Cs5 for a year or so and I use it if I have to. For this image I did some color and temperature adjustments and also some minor tweaks and fixes.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Canon 5D Mark III and 70d for my bodies. I also carry my 50mm f/1.4, 24-105mm f/4, 18-55mm, and my 55-250mm. Majority of the time I keep the 50mm and the 24-105mm on my bodies. I only use the 18-55mm with the 70d when it is in my SPL Water Housing so I can take pictures in the water. I use the 55-250mm for my images of my friends in the water while I'm on shore. I am saving up for a new super-telephoto for this winter. I also bring along my Fuji Instax 210, my tripod, and my shutter release/intervalometer.

Feedback

The only advice I could give for capturing an image like this would be to be conscious of the light and water. The two of those things were key in this image. You need to make sure light isn't really harsh or to high in the sky because it could cause really unflattering and dark shadows. Now for the water, Make sure you watch where it is! I live in Hawaii and I'm constantly on the beach and taking pictures near the water but I can't even tell you how often I get distracted or lose focus for just a moment and almost get my camera gear wet. So far I have not had my gear get wet, but I on the other hand get wet constantly.
