This shot was taken from Brooklyn Bridge Park on a week long visit to New York We had just walked right across the bridge to get this aspect of the skylineTime
It was taken in the late morningLighting
It was quite a cloudy day, and my intention was to capture the stormy feel of the morningEquipment
The shot was taken with a Canon 7D and a Sigma 10 - 20 lens. Hand held, no filtersInspiration
I had dreamt of taking this shot since my daughter went to New York the previous year and had her photograph taken in Brooklyn Bridge Park with this view behind her. I think it sums up New York. A wonderful place for cityscape photographersEditing
Post processing was done in Camera RAW, CS6 & NIK Colourefexpro. I used dodge and burn on some areas of the buildings. This might also have been a good opportunity for HDR, but I preferred this as a single shot. I have to admit though, I have a similar shot without the bridge as a 3 shot HDR but with no tripod it was hand held.In my camera bag
I have a Canon 7D, a Canon 5D Mkii Lenses are all IS L lenses, 24- 105, 16-35, 70-200 & 100 - 400 An adjustable ND filter, a big stopper & a polarising filter I changed my Sigma (the one I took this shot with) recently for the 16-35 Canon after upgrading to a full frame camera.Feedback
Just go to New York! The photographic opportunities are immense, and I only wish I had spent more time there. Brooklyn Bridge Park and Dumbo are excellent places to get a great view of Manhattan. I would also suggest going there at night also, an opportunity that I unfortunately missed! Further north from this park you come to an area under the bridge where you can take that iconic picture of the Empire State Building through the Bridge Span. At the South end of the park there are old pier supports poking out of the water which make a good foreground. Also the ferry to the Statue of Liberty gives you great opportunities on the way back to take skyline shots Finally .... make sure you take a tripod with you!
