This is another fantastic place in Madeira Island, called Ribeira da Janela, where a water course descends from the mountains and ends right here. This has created a unique pebble beach, which is adorned by two gigantic rock formations that persistently resist the strength of the waves. I went to this place on my 2nd day in Madeira, but light conditions were far from good. As I couldn't let this one pass, I returned there two days later, and it payed up.
Technical data:
Exposure: 30 seconds
Aperture: f9.5
ISO: 100
Tripod, remote shutter
Manual focus
7 stop ProStop IRND filter (Hitech), 4 stop soft ND Grad (Hitech)

Location
In the gorgeous Madeira Island. This is a beach called Ribeira da Janela, in the north coast of the Island.Time
About one hour before sunset, at 6 pmLighting
Well, this is one of my rare photo where I didn't shoot near sunset with the sun in the frame. This place is oriented towards northeast, so the sun is covered by clouds on the left. Fortunately this is such an amazing and exquisite spot, so it doesn't need the classic warm light to still be stunning.Equipment
I used a Sony a77 camera with a wide angle lens (Sigma 10-20mm). Tripod was a Manfrotto 190XPROB. As usual, my Formatt Hitech filters were essential to be able to do the long exposure. In this particular shot I used a 4 stop soft ND Graduated filter and a 7 stop ProStop IRND full ND filter.Inspiration
I had been on this beach two days before, but the light wasn't right, had arrived too late and the tide didn't have enough strength to break through the pebble barrier. Still, I kept persistently thinking about it for the following days and, even though the available time at Madeira was scarce, with so many spots to photograph, I just had to return there. Can't say I regret it! It was obviously the sheer strength and beauty of this place which inspired me to take this photo. The pebble beach is a perfect compliment to the two gigantic rock formations which resist the passage of time and wave erosion. A true monument of beauty.Editing
Not that much post-processing. This is one of those images which you check on the camera LCD, and just know you have nailed it. Mostly slight color balance adjustments and selective local contrast enhancement, to bring out details. In my camera bag
Sony cameras, Sigma wide angle lens, Formatt Hitech filters, Terrascape filter bags, Naneu and Manfrotto bags, remote wireless shutter, Giottos rocket blower, spare batteries, lots of microfiber cloths, lanterna, waterproof jacket and, most important, a McGyver knife!Feedback
Do thorough research on the best spots of your chosen destination, get ready to be soaked in salt water, use proper shoes for wet rocks, don't be afraid to keep your tripod VERY low, use ND filters for the long exposure, use soft transition ND Grads to avoid underexposing the rocks, use small apertures for proper depth of field, keep your ISO low, use a sturdy and stable tripod, balance composition and hope for the best!
