Location
I took this photo in Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. It's often mentioned to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. There are several indigenous villages around the lake. The photo was taken in San Marcos. From this place you have an incredible view of Volcan San Pedro (right), Volcan Atitlan (center) and Volcan Toliman (left).Time
This was taken on July 19, 2014 at 5:40 AM. I got up early that day just to enjoy the peaceful and quiet atmosphere just before sunrise. Actually my father pulled me out of the bed and I am thankful for that.Lighting
It was still before sunlight. The sky was already really bright, so the foreground (dock and person) almost seemed like a complete black silhouette, but I still wanted the wooden texture of the dock to be seen.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D5100, with an 18-105mm lens. I used the JOBY GorillaPod.Inspiration
Normally I go to the end of the dock and just enjoy the sunrise and take some photos from there. This time I wanted to capture the moment waiting on the dock for the sun to come out looking at this great landscape. My father went on the dock as usual and I waited on the terrace. This picture came out. Afterwards I still had time to join him and feel the first sunbeams of the day.Editing
Actually this photo almost hasn't any post-processing. I didn't use any filter, so I just put up the contrast a little bit and adjusted the orange tone in the sky.In my camera bag
Unfortunately my equipment still isn't that big due to financial reasons. When I am on a trip I always take my Nikon D5100 with a 18-105mm lens with me. The UV filter is always on it just for lens protection. In my bag I always carry my GorillaPod, a remote shutter release, a head lamp (and a swiss knife). That's it.Feedback
If you want to take a photo of a sunset or sunrise on a specific place, best would be to get there at least one day before. The first day I would advice not taking any photos. Explore the location, observe the scenery, look for some objects in the foreground to include in your image (in my case the dock). Take care that the foreground object doesn't steal to much attention from surrounding landscape. Notice the exact time of sunrise or sunset. So the next day you are prepared for the perfect shot. And never forget to enjoy this beautiful moments, letting the camera beside (on the first day) and just watch.
