I took this photo in the run off tunnel belo a local resevoirTime
I was out at night lightpainting with and this image was created at 00.30 on Saturday morning in September 2012Lighting
The tunnel was pitch black where i couldnt even see my hand in front of my face which is just the way i like it. I had to place 3 glow sticks below the tripod legs and point them in the direction the camera was facing. That way i always new where to face when light paintingEquipment
I used a Nikon D300 with 17-55mm f2.8 lens locked onto a tripod. The camera was in bulb mode to give me time freedom while lightpainting I used a led lenser x21 torch with a blue gel to light the walls, the sparks are from a steel wool burn which is done by using steel wool in a kitchen whisk dangled on a rope to knee level and igniting it then spinning at speed. The white is a collection of battery operated xmas lights tied together and spun similar to the steel wool. All done in camera in one exposure hence the exposure timeInspiration
Steel wool burning looks great in tunnels but i wanted to add some more effects and the walls were perfect for lighting with a blue gel to contrast with the spinning sparks. The white orb was added to give the centre of the image sonething to focus on. If i was doing this again i would dam off the tunnel to get a better reflection on the floorEditing
This is a straight out of camera direct jpeg of the raw file and no post processing was appliedIn my camera bag
Various lenses, tripod, cable release, hot shoe spirit level, torches, head torch, glow sticks and anything that lights up for night time light painting. Kids toy stores take on new meaning when looking for creative night time props. Star wars light sabres that alternate colours are my favouriteFeedback
Find somewhere quiet and dark preferrably where you wont get bothered by people looking on so that you can be creative without being interrupted. At night even the mundane can look completely different when you shine a torch on it from different angles. Be aware for security of your surroundings at all times because when its dark and you are using lights, people can see you but you might not see them Have fun ;)
