Yes I was delivering a set of calendars on jet-skis to a client in Weymouth and that was a 10 minute job. They asked me what I would do for the next 2 plus hrs until the next train home. I said might go to Portland Bill roughly 20 mins away. The storm was forming when I was delivering the calendars. I had no idea what to expect. When I got there, there was nothing much to do until I saw the storm clouds opened up and allowed a shaft of light to hit the light house for literately 15-20 seconds. I jumped down onto a rock and turn round, managed to fire off 1 shot the above, checked on the camera that I got it, went to take another one and the light had gone for the rest of the day. So glad the camera was set up correctly otherwise I would have missed it.

Nikon D100 , not sure what lens, but probably the 70-210, hand held

Inspiration

Turned around and saw it. The light house is a visitor attraction and had seen it many times before. But there are normally lots of people around it, but today with the storm on a weekday, there was no one around. Once I had taken it the landscape in front of the lighthouse looked like a martian or moon landscape.

Feedback

Watch the storm clouds and go out in the storm, but stay safe, sometimes in the storm, there are shafts of light coming through the clouds at odd moments. Also when the storm is passing, and the rain stops, the clouds have different colours and shafts as light onto the land / seascape. Just be prepared to get a little wet for that amazing shot. Then the whole area is wet and water droplets on every surface, ideal for reflections in puddles, leaves and paintwork once the sun has come out. Don't forget if you have a multicolored lamp in your garden, find a plant and photograph the rain through the light and you get surreal example of rain. I did that while I am in Cambodia at my hotel, and I did not get once.
