Location
This photo was taken in front of a busy commercial bank building right in the center Georgetown, capital of Penang state. I figure it will be a good background depicting white-collar working lifestyle.Time
It was captured in the evening at 5:30pm where the weather would cool down a bit after a typical hot sunny afternoon in Malaysia.Lighting
There was nice available light shining into the commercial bank building hallway which creates a mellow ambience. So yeah, I used natural lighting for this shot.Equipment
I used a Nikon D800 with a Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 prime lens. It was all handheld and I didn't use any flash or tripod, so I needed to boost up my iso to 800 and increased shutter speed to 1/800 in order to freeze the action while wide aperture of f/1.8 was used in order to have a greater depth of field with nice bokeh behind.Inspiration
This was a model's portfolio photoshoot and I was thinking of a variety of themes other than the usual model portrait. So, this idea of conceptual portrait comes into my mind and I felt it would make a good model portfolio with a sense of uniqueness.Editing
Yes, I did a few retouching using adobe Lightroom editing software, enhancing shadows and highlights and I also chose a bluish color tone to create a cool mood environment. In my camera bag
I would normally have both my Nikon D3s and D800 cameras in my bag, reason is the extra camera not only plays an insurance role just in case the first camera breakdown but having an extra set would also spend lesser time in changing required lens. For lenses, I would usually bring along the holy trinity of Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8. That way I would cover every angle from ultra-wide to super-tight. And of course I would not forget my favourite portrait prime lens of 85mm f/1.4Feedback
To capture this similar conceptual elevating theme photo with natural light, it's best to boost up your iso and crank up your shutter speed to mimimum 1/800 and above in order to freeze the action... you will also need to shoot in high speed burst mode in order to capture multiple shots and choose the best one. But the hardest part would be requiring your subject to keep jumping at mid air with a running pose for you to snap. Give it a try and you might surprise yourself with the result!
