Behind The Lens

Location

This is a very special photo for me. It was My first time in Nepal and I did the trek to Mount Everest Base Camp, that I have always dreamed of doing. I reached the Base Camp with my guide, and we were alone there and it was magical. But you can’t see Mount Everest from there, so we started to walk up to the peak Kalapatthar to be able to see Everest. After many long days of walking I took this photo during my way up to the peak at 5545m and it was a magical moment.

Time

I had been walking long days to get to the Base Camp and I could feel that my body was so tired. My guide and I, started to trek up to Kalapatthar around 3:30pm to see the sunset. He asked me several times if I was sure I wanted to walk up there and said we are probably not going to see Everest due to all the clouds. The visibility was really bad and that we had been walking for a long time, and needed to rest to start walking back the day after. I said I wanted to reach the top, even if we didn’t see Everest. And I will remember this moment forever, we walked and walked and suddenly we were above the clouds and the sun were shining. You couldn’t get a better view of Everest. It was only the guide and I, who say this moment. Everyone else had stayed down in the small house to rest. The sunset started a 5pm and the sky turned pink and orange over the highest peak of the planet.

Lighting

When I took the photo, it just thought “this view don’t look the same in the photo”. I wanted it show and give the same feeling as when I saw it in reality. So I needed to adjust the exposure a little bit and make it darker.

Equipment

This is shot with my IPhone 12 Pro. I had my camera with me, but during the trek it stopped working. Luckily, I could take the photo with my IPhone to remember the moment.

Inspiration

I have always loved mountains and have read so many stories about people climbing Everest. I got so inspired after all these stories and wanted to see the mountain myself and capture it. I knew the view from Kalapatthar would give me the best view, if the weather was good. I love challenges when I take photos, and this was a big one. I flew alone to Nepal and did this trek, just in hope to se the sunset over Everest. It is the most spectacular mountain you can see in the sunset.

Editing

No I did not

In my camera bag

I always bring my Sony A5000, it’s a good beginner camera for me and I have a lot of fun with the camera. I can try different things, explore and it’s a small one. Fit perfect in my bag when I am out on adventure.

Feedback

Nepal and specifically the Himalayas, is unpredictable and you need to be prepared for all different weather. I was there in December, and it was cold but the chance to see all the mountains was pretty big. It was challenging to do the trek but if you have a vision and a dream of something, you enjoy all of the journey. Listen to the guides due to safety, but if you have the chance and the energy. Keep on going to the Kalapatthar peak. I was told I was not going to see anything up there, and then I got this photo. You never know, but don’t give up if you have a goal.
