Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at a country house in the suburbs of Dnipro. I am an amateur photographer, so I try to catch every beautiful shot wherever I am.

Time

This is probably one of my favorite pictures. I remember a long time trying to capture Motya at rest. I didn't have a camera or a tripod, and I was taking pictures on my phone, so I was trying to find the angle and the right settings on the fly. It was one of those nice evenings when the hot day was winding down and the heat died down. The picture was taken on an August evening.

Lighting

I wanted this image to look cute and to captivate the viewer with the image of a kitten. There was a lot of beautiful light from the setting sun on the roof of the aviary and I decided that this light would be a great way to illuminate the cat, add softness to the scene, and make the story even cuter.

Equipment

This was taken on a Xiaomi phone with the settings: ƒ/1.69, 1/652, 6.72 mm, ISO 50. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I've been looking for opportunities to shoot Motya outdoors. She's usually very frisky, and it's not always possible to capture her at rest. Initially I wanted to use a stockpile of firewood with interesting, beautiful textures, but when Motya didn't want to sit still and decided to climb out onto the roof of the aviary, I decided this would be a great place to shoot too.

Editing

Usually, outdoor photography requires a lot of processing. But in this particular case, when shooting on a phone, I decided not to process anything, just cropped the photo a bit.

In my camera bag

When I travel, I can't always take my equipment with me, so I try to get the most out of taking pictures on my phone.

Feedback

One of the main characteristics of a photographer who shoots animals in progress is to have patience and wait for the right moment, which is very important. Be prepared for a variety of different plans and situations. Lighting and shadows are key, but daylight conditions and falling shadows can create the right atmosphere as you move behind a fidgety animal. Have patience and take more shots, so you can choose the best ones later!
