Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at the end of June 2020 in Ohio, USA at an equestrian summer camp created to educate, train, and empower the next generation of equestrian performers. This image was taken as one of the summer camp participants rode their horse along the ridge as a summer rain storm was moving in.

Time

The image itself looks later evening but the reality was this image was taken around in the early afternoon roughly around 12:30 pm. Because of the weather conditions and storm clouds setting the right tone for light and mood paired with the rider being in the right spot everything came together perfectly for this capture.

Lighting

I stood at the bottom of the hill from the ridge the child was riding on and saw this image happening. It was darker above me with just some light breaking in the sky where the storm clouds hadn't reached. I wanted the crisp silhouette along with the mood the clouds brought and can say this entire effect was only possible because of the weather at the time.

Equipment

I took this image using a Canon 80D, Tamron 70-200 Di LD IF lens, no flash, ISO 400, F/2.8, Shutter Speed 1/125

Inspiration

My work for the summer camp was strictly marketing images so clear, pristine shots not the artsy fine art look this one exhibits. However for a brief moment I saw this child riding along the ridge I clearly saw this image and wanted to capture it, for the beauty of the moment and because I had time to take preciously few images similar to this one that weekend. It was spur of the moment and happened in seconds the child riding was cresting the ridge just mere moments later, I only had the one split second opportunity where all the conditions came together making this image happen. It was truly a decisive moment shot.

Editing

For the most part this image is straight out of camera. I do photograph in RAW so there was a little post production done on this image. I crisped the shadows just a bit, performed a slight crop before saving in a viewable format.

In my camera bag

Oh gosh, my bag is ever changing given shoots I am off too. I have been a rodeo/ equestrian photographer for a decade so usually have my bag equipped for sport and action photography but for the worst lighting conditions imaginable. At any given time I have multiple camera bodies-- I am a Canon Photographer so 80D, Rebels, plethora of other bodies I own-- I always have primes ready to go 50 mm, 24 mm, 85 mm, and my go to everyday lens 24-70 mm as well as 70-200 mm f/2.8 lens. There are days where I may only drag one body and one lens with me and others I have my multi-case because I haven't decided what I will need.

Feedback

After a decade photographing equines and their riders I have learned that you have to be prepared for anything and you have to be watching constantly. Little moments like this happen in a blink of an eye and they exceedingly special if you see and capture them. I generally work in settings were 30+ equestrians and their horses are working, performing, existing at the same time so it can be overwhelming and generally luck shots. Much like landscape photographers where you have to be vigilant and wait for the right conditions for the shot, that same idea applied here patience, a great eye, and luck can help capture amazing moments.
