Behind The Lens

Location

The shot was taken in the cafè where I work with a big help from my girlfriend.

Time

It was around 4pm in Scotland, so not a lot of light coming from outside.

Lighting

I put the "set" near a big window to get as much light as possible from outside. Unfortunately it wasn't much as the sky was cloudy and dark. Also, the café is at a underground level and it gets light only from this window. That is why I also put it under a tungsten light from the cafè.

Equipment

The camera is a Nikon Z& with a 24-70mm nikkor lens. No tripod was used for this picture, only patience.

Inspiration

I was participating to a coffee competition organized in the cafè in which I work. I originally wanted to show just half of the mug with some leaves and the wood in the background, but my girlfriend created a background so nice that I could not include it all!

Editing

I was combining natural and artificial lights so I had to adjust a little the temperature and the saturation of the blue tones to get a clear and brilliant white. All I wanted was a good combination of the wood and the leaves with red berries.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a 50mm a 24-70mm and a 70-300mm with a tripod and a polarized filter for the tele lens. This is when I have to stay light and I use my small backpack. If I can indulge myself and I have to travel less, I add to my bigger backpack a 14mm wide lens a set of filters and a flash.

Feedback

DO use a tripod! Stay close to a window, the natural reflected light creates some nice shadows and makes the froth shine. Do not open the diafram too much or you'll end up with a bad background. I was using only my shaky hands and I did not have much light so I had to open it a lot, in fact the background is at the limit of the depth of field. Have fun when you do it or the picture will reflect your boredom.
