Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my bedroom. I was diagnosed with Agoraphobia when I was a teen, so most of the creative magic happens in my safe spaces.

Time

This was taken in the afternoon. Most of my images are. I live in Portland and having the sun peek through your window is a miracle sometimes.

Lighting

The light source is natural light coming through a window. I wanted this image to be intimate. I wanted light to be the aura that leads the way in the most subtle way.

Equipment

I used my Sony A7s II with the Tamron - 28-75mm f/2.8 DI III RXD Zoom Lens. I had a tripod and a black piece of cardboard to create a soft shadow.

Inspiration

Well... anxiety made me do it. This was shot on a day I woke up and was at war with myself. I remember having panic attacks because I felt like everyone around me was at their creative peak and I was falling behind and to top it off I was (and still am) incredibly home sick. I remember taking a shower, slapping on a bit of makeup to feel better, putting one of my favorite records (the band is called Los Pepiniyoz and is from where I’m from, Puerto Rico) and when the song: “Silbar o Llorar” (in english is: to whistle or to cry) started playing it just hit me like a bag of bricks. I recall sitting down and just... feeling— I played the song on repeat, grabbed my equipment, prepped everything and started shooting.

Editing

For these type of portraits I like to keep it as real possible. I did some dodging and burning and worked with the colors.

In my camera bag

I don't have a lot of equipment (sadly). I carry my Sony a7sII, Tamron - 28-75mm f/2.8 DI III RXD Zoom Lens, Hoya Cross Screen/Star 4 filter, and reflector, White Balance Cards and a 35mm film point and shoot camera.

Feedback

The best advice is to feel. Don’t think about it too much, and just shoot.
