Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this image in my home in Kaneohe, on the island of Oahu, in the state Hawaii.

Time

This was shot about 10:00 am.

Lighting

The window is behind and to the left of the shot and fill light is aimed from the right. I had to make sure that the cup handle would show as a 'heart' in the image.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D4, EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, ISO 100, f/3.2, exp.1/80, spot metering, tripod, no flash.

Inspiration

I'm a romantic at heart, so I can't help but love the French, heart-shaped macarons. I had a moment of inspiration realizing that the cup handle could also make a heart.

Editing

Not much, really. I use Lightroom to straighten and correct minor details, but this was about finding the lighting to make this work in the first place.

In my camera bag

I'm a Canon user to start with and I love macro—that's my first love. Living where I do, (Oahu, Hawai‘i) I have a love of landscape, because there is so much natural beauty here. So I do often carry a wide-angle 16-35mm, as well as a fish eye lens. I also love to work with a 50mm 1.2.
