Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Tuscany near San Quirico D'orcia (Italy). The shots you see are the result of so much passion and so many hours dedicated to photography and my love I have for this beautiful country.

Time

ou do not always manage to find favorable conditions for a sunrise shoot then especially if you live to 300 km from the location. However a dose of luck it takes always on these occasions and so it was happened on January when I decided to leave at 3:00 AM from Rome to reach the Belvedere farm in San Quirico d'Orcia.

Lighting

The landscape partially covered by the fog and the wonderful light of the dawn have contributed to have some magical and unrepeatable shots.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 5D mark II with a Canon EF 70-200 f4 L IS. In these circumstances, for the lack of light is mandatory to use a sturdy tripod, I used a Manfrotto one with a canon shutter release.

Inspiration

Italy is a country full of great places to photograph and one of these is the Tuscan region that I know as a child. This country is rich, photographically speaking, of beautiful hill, farmhouses and amazing trees as cypresses by the way here you have the possibility to create superb composition.I like the idea and I am very excited that these land were used by the great painters of the Renaissance in their paintings.

Editing

This was a single shot, I did not spend a lot of time to develop this photo, I have improved on the white balance, levels and contrast slightly.

In my camera bag

This is the stuff that I can always depend on. Of course, every shoot requires different gear. I usually carry on for landscapes shots a Canon 5D mark II that is my prime and favorite camera, a Canon EF 16-35 f2,8 L and Canon EF 70-200 f4 L IS lenses. Spare batteries for 5D Mark II x2, Sandisk compact flash cards 32GB x2 and 16 GBx2, and a canon shutter release.

Feedback

I want to remember that a lot of patience and a lot of passion are the basis for a successful photo. Landscape photography requires a special light that you can find it at dawn or in the evening at sunset. This light is magic, it is warmer, softer and the longer shadows create extra dimension and can also provide interesting shapes and patterns for you to use in your compositions. You should include something in the foreground and you should also be lucky to include in your shot interesting sky partly-cloudy. Small aperture is required means greater depth of field, which is what you want for most landscapes.
