Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the wedding of two old friends, location was Ash Barton Manor in Devon and this shot was taken outside the main building on the front lawn. Ash Barton Manor is still one of my favourite places to shoot as it has so much variation in scenes to take advantage of for multiple styles of shooting.

Time

the whole day was a perfect blend of overcast and clear blue sky so i had no issues with too much light or too little which is always a challenge to work around, especially for my journalistic approach to shooting. During this shot mid afternoon the sun was just peaking out through a cloud which coupled with the shade of the large tree camera left it made for a nicely balanced shot.

Lighting

the lighting throughout the day was well balanced, especially with this shot as i had great options with the couple's position to the sun as they walked towards me. The large tree camera left gave enough negative fill to avoid too much backlight during the shot.

Equipment

my main camera was the Sony A7R iii which i hadn't shot with before but had looked forward to using for a long time, the Sony 85mm 1.4GM was stuck on the A7R iii for the whole day as it was a beautiful combo. my second body was my trusty 5D mark iii with the EF 16-35mm L MKIII.

Inspiration

as one of the most asked for shots from couples/weddings in general, i'm always planning this shot in my head far in advance and once i get to the first venue recce i usually know instantly where to create the shot. In this instance i knew the balanced light and long depth of the path behind the couple would create a beautiful scene for this shot. i wanted to lock in both of their expressions and fill the outskirts of the frame with confetti (the more the better!) making sure i could get some clearance from the arms extending out everywhere. It took a couple frames to get right but the last shot was the winner.

Editing

i always do the basic corrections and processing making sure to use the maximum DR of the camera/lens to create a balanced image, i had to pull the shadows up a bit and add some contrast and clarity as i always love punchy and crisp images.

In my camera bag

I currently don't personally own any bodies, instead using the 5D3 from my other business to run with and then i rent whatever second body/brand i think i need for the job. I own several L series lenses that a staples in my kit, namely the 100mm 2.8 L.

Feedback

As a purely Verite/journalistic photographer when it comes to weddings all i can advise is to never stop looking at and seeing your surroundings rather than shooting rapid fire shots and hoping for the best. You will always end up cutting shots down in the selection process so use that spare time to look for the shot you want and try to preempt the scene happening.
