Location
This was taken in Ironwood, Michigan at our local beach, Little Girl's Point, while the ice was still pretty thick on Lake SuperiorTime
Sunset. It's the best time of day to shoot ice photos where we're situated on the lake.Lighting
I take advantage of the natural light and head out when I canEquipment
Canon TSi 6Inspiration
The ice on Lake Superior is so beautiful, otherworldly when you see the stark difference between winter and summer. And every year it's different because of how the waves crash to the shore. I try to take at least one photo safari a year to capture the ice.Editing
Yes, using Photoshop. But I try to keep it to a minimum. I hate when pictures are too saturated. I use the vibrance instead. I love using the contrast too, although there wasn't much to do here. I take highlights down to see more details. In my camera bag
My Canon Tsi goes with me everywhere. I always have my zoom lens on and the camera set to sports shots in case I see wildlife while we're driving. Then it's usually my normal lens for shooting landscapes. And batteries. Lots of extra batteries.Feedback
Timing. I live in this area, so I know when the sun is going down. Try to be at a certain place at least thirty minutes before sunset. Sunset pics on an ice-covered lake speak for themselves. It's just composition and the natural light does the rest.
