Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the Exotif feline rescue center in Crown Point Indiana. They take in rescues and mistreated big cats and give them a natural home and lots of good care. They are a volunteer run non profit that helps educate and care for the animals humanely. They have rescued and cared for hundreds of lions, tigers, serials, leopards, Bob cats and other exotic wild cats.

Time

This was in the early afternoon on a pretty clear day. We had been walking around the park and I was looking for a good angle to capture a majestic look that I had envisioned. The tiger had been fed a bit earlier and was resting on the structure here and seemed to be just the right position I was looking for.

Lighting

The light was pretty bright but had a little diffusion from the tree cover and some passing clouds. The sun came out and gave a nice glow to some of the tigers fur.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3400 with a 70-300 4.5-6.3 lens hand held.

Inspiration

I was looking for a good profile shot that said majestic in my head. I got a lot of good ones of them in action or lounging but this one was my favorite of them all.

Editing

This one isn't overly processed. Just a bit of adjustment but it came pretty well out of the camera in the raw file.

In my camera bag

Now I run a couple frames with my main being my Nikon D500 and my secondary being a D610. I've moved toward primes mainly and will have a 50mm 1.8G, 85mm 1.8G and a 24mm 2.8 D as my main workhorses. All of those are native Nikon primes. The 24mm is an absolute tank if a lens even through its older and is AI-S. Occasionally I'll pull out a 35mm 1.8 or my Nikom 70-300 for long work or if I'm going to be out in the woods or trails rent a Nikon 200-500mm 5.6 and a Tamron 90mm macro.

Feedback

I think that visualization and knowing your camera and lens are huge in getting "That" photo you want. I used to think I needed gear but I have many photos on here that were taken on a D3400 and kit lenses. Even with a flagship camera and a full frame in the arsenal now and some decent glass I feel I got a good deal of my technique on shooting with a basic camera and having to figure work arounds on it. The less then made me appreciate the more when I upgraded and more focused on technique improvements. Read and watch vids and use the best camera which is your imagination.
