Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Osceola Island which is close to South Holston Lake in Bristol, TN.

Time

On this particular day, I had been to the lake nearby taking photos of the sunrise. As I was leaving I noticed some light fog hanging around the island so I decided to go walk the path that follows the shoreline. Shortly after starting on the path I took this shot, which was about an hour after sunrise.

Lighting

With this area, I really had no plan on what I was going to shoot. I thought the fog might make for something interesting with the water or the trees but nothing concrete in mind. As I was walking on the path I noticed how the fog was moving and amplifying the sun rays trickling through the trees, as well as lighting up the leaves.

Equipment

Shot with a Canon 600D (T3i), Canon EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 on a tripod.

Inspiration

I have been to this area before, mostly just to walk my dog and not take any pictures. Since I was close by I thought I would at least look around and see what I could come up with. Once I saw the lighting I couldn't resist.

Editing

I shoot in RAW so all of my images require some post-processing in Photoshop. In this particular photo I made minimal adjustments, with some additional emphasis on the color so the sunlight on the leaves would pop.

In my camera bag

I always have 2 lenses with me. Although I used a Canon 75-300mm lens in this photo, I rarely carry that one. My main lens is a Sigma 18-200mm, but I also carry a Canon 50mm prime lens, I love the big aperture with this one.

Feedback

No matter where you are, sometimes your best images happen when you least expect it. I'm not saying not to plan, but there are occasions where you may be surprised. Explore the area, walk around and get different views of your surroundings. Always shoot around sunrise or sunset, you can't beat the light during these times.
