Location
The photo was taken in New Zealand, secondary schools swimming competition.Time
At around middayLighting
I was lucky because the swimmer's head was hit by a ray of sunlight shined through the swimmingpool's window at the moment the photo was taken. I didn't use flash.Equipment
I handheld my camera. Canon EOS Rebel with Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens.Inspiration
To photograph swimmers, especially fast swimmers during a competition... it was a challenge to me. I had to wait the right moment when his head and both arms are above the water. I laid down to the edge of the swimming pool and as soon as he jumped into the water I breathed with him and tried to catch his rhythm to find the right moment to push the shutter-release button.Editing
Yes, I did. I really liked the SOOC photo and I just cropped a bit and added some tone. After I just started to play with it because his head was well lit, in the center of the photo surrounded by blue water I thought I try focal zoom and I did, a here you see the result. In my camera bag
Canon EOS Rebel, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens, SIGMA DC 17-70mm1:2.8-4.5, Canon 50mm, camera cleaning set, tripod, extra flashFeedback
Patient and practice. After I found the swimmer's rhythm I was able to catch not just this but more good moments. You need to know your camera well and need to focus the subject. The image was in my mind before I shoot it only the focal zoom post processing wasn't planned.
