Behind The Lens

Location

The shot was taken in the city center of Mayence, Germany.

Time

I shot this during one of my night walks through the city after finishing to work at around midnight. It started to rain and all colors nicely increased by reflecting the street lights.

Lighting

No additional lighting was required. The street lights did a great job.

Equipment

Unfortunately I left my Canon camera at home this day. Same for tripods. Same for all equipment. So I have decided to try my Huawei phone's camera for the scene. I placed it on the fence of a construction site right behind me to be able to shoot with a long exposure time (20 secs). Loved the result a lot when I saw the colors and these nice lens flares on every street light.

Inspiration

The whole scene itself was inspiration enough. I didn't prepare to shoot anything that night.

Editing

It's almost what I saw by walking down this street. I just increased the contrast and the values of red and green a bit and added some black vignetting.

In my camera bag

I do a lot of night photography because my real job always ends around midnight. That's the reason why I always have some tripods, a ring flash and an unleashed flash in my car's trunk. Further I'm using a Pluto Trigger to have more control about automation (for time lapses, etc) and remote triggering. One lens I have always with me is the Canon 24-105mm 1:4L IS USM. It covers a good area and is coming with a macro option... in case you need to get really close. The rest varies.

Feedback

Stabilize, aim and shoot. Basically that's it. Doing night photography requires long exposures and this means you need a stable camera. The rest is looking for the balance between ISO, exposure time and aperture - and having fun finding it.
