We had just gotten Athena a month prior and this was one of her first snow experiences in our backyard!Time
This was taken around 10 am on a very overcast dayLighting
Athena looks almost wolf-like to us and the dark background against the snow just caught my attention immediately. The light that day was pretty even, it was overcast and snowing, but it just created a gorgeous diffused soft light that works so well in snow.Equipment
I shoot with a 5dmiii and this particular shot was taken with a Canon 70-200 2.8is ii (at f/2.8)Inspiration
I had severe puppy fever right before the snow hit our area, I suspect I had a deep want to just throw a cute fluffy puppy in the snow. While Athena wasn't the cute fluffy fur ball I had been envisioning, her gorgeous markings and intense eyes really inspired me to shoot her in this particular location in our yardEditing
I did flip and mirror the background to create a tunnel feel to the background. Much better than the big tree stump that was there! Mostly I just dodged and burned to enhance the highlights and shadows that were already there! In my camera bag
In my bad, you can bet I always have my Canon 5dmiii with the 70-200 2.8is ii attached ready to go. This is my main go-to lens. Other lenses stashed in the bag are my trusty 50 1.4 and a Yognuo 35mm! Don't discount that little lens, it does great for the price and is great when I need something a little wider! I also have two Yognuo 568-exii lashes and a magmod system. I carry all this and more in my gorgeous Teal House Of Flynn Evermore Camera Bag-- which actually fits MUCH MUCH more than what I usually lug around!Feedback
Dogs are my favorite to capture. I have a variety of funny, kooky noises I honk out of my mouth to get their attention and most times a cute head tilt. If that doesn't work, I have a little toy whistle that does the trick too. I always make sure to lock focus and be steady before grabbing the dog's attention, because you never know if a dog will just take off towards you in excitement and I need to be ready to catch that shot in a split second!
