Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Beaver’s Bend State Park last November. Beaver’s Bend is locates in Broken Bow, Oklahoma which is in the Southeast part of the state.

Time

This was shot around 6pm as the sun began to set. Since it was shot in November, I got a nice golden glow across the Landscape and water.

Lighting

I shoot with natural light and haven’t used any flashes for four years. The thing with natural light is to know the area, season and subject to maximize the potential for capturing that great image.

Equipment

For this particular shot, I used my iPhone 7 Plus and also used a prime lens made by stylus. I placed my phone on a dock rail and shot across the water.

Inspiration

When I saw this scene, I knew instantly that I had a great shot. It was very tranquil and peaceful that evening and this shot says it all.

Editing

I made my initial adjustments in Lightroom. Just minor tweaks like contrast, exposure, highlights, etc and then applied a final filter using Smart Photo Editor. Overall, there was very little done to the original image.

In my camera bag

I have a Cannon EOS Rebel T6 that I shoot with 98% of the time. I usually carry my Tamaron 18-200m lens which is my go to lens and my macro lens, the Tamaron 90m f/2.8. Depending on what I am shooting I will also bring the Cannon 70-300m with me. And naturally I have my iPhone with me at all times.

Feedback

The one thing I say is to know your equipment. For example, I use to drive by or walk by things on the way to my shoot location and say “that’s a really scene I’d like to shoot. “ Most of the time was I was usually in a hurry and just tell myself that I would come back but then completely forget about it or couldn’t find it again. These days when I encounter such a dilemma, I will immediately stop and get the shot or I pull out my iPhone and mark the location in Apple Maps. The app has a cool feature that allows you to add pins to specific spots and then you can give them names. This especially helpful when I don’t have time to stop and grab that shot or it’s not the right time of day to get that perfect image that’s stuck in my head. I regret that I didn’t know my map app had this feature earlier because there were shots that I missed or was in too much of a hurry to stop and get. So let the technology you have work for you instead of you working against it.
