Thanks! Long hike and camping on top of the mountain was a poor idea, plus I lost a leg to my tripod that night when i went back out to do astro shots over the mountain, but this shot made it all worth it.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the top of a sister mountain to Mt Taranaki. The location of this iconic pond is about a half mile past the Poukai Hut along the Poukai Track trail.

Time

This was taken at sunset.

Lighting

The lighting just fell perfectly together. During the day, the top of the mountain was covered in clouds. Even as we started our climb the clouds were still encompassing the peak of the mountain and I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to get a good shot. My wife and I were on our honeymoon and this was the only night we would be at the mountain so I wanted to see what I could get even though the conditions didn't seem to be ideal. After hiking for two hours we near the Poukai Hut and ran into a couple that was on their way back down. They told us that the clouds had disappointing and the view was incredible and since it was getting close to sunset we decide to hurry. When we finally made it to the spot it was just before sunset and I took the time to set up and compose the shot. Just as the sun set, the perfect cloud cover came that caught the fading light and lit up with incredible pinks against a blue sky background. I couldn't have asked for more perfect conditions(well if could have been a bit warmer).

Equipment

I took this shot with a Sony A7rII fixed with the sony-ziess 16-35mm F4 lens. I was set up on my carbon fiber travel tripod which happened to lose a leg on the hike back to the tent(don't ask, I searched and never found it).

Inspiration

I do a lot of research for shots I want to take when I travel. This particular shot i fell in love with when I saw other photos taken here and it took me a long time to narrow down exactly where to find this spot. Someone geo tagged their photo taken here but in the wrong location out in some persons field and since that was the first photo I came across it took me a while to figure out that was in fact the wrong location.

Editing

This is actually a stitched panoramic consisting of 5 shots taken in portrait orientation. After stitching the raw shots together, I did some minor tweaks in post to get it to represent the vibrant color and detail I saw when I was there.

In my camera bag

I like to be prepared so im normally lugging around as much of my equipment as i can reasonably carry just in case. IVe got my sony A&RII, Sony-ziess 16-35, sony 70-200mm F2, ziess 55mm 1.8, ronikon 14mm 2.8, a tripod, breakthrough ND and polarizer filters, and a bunch of extra batteries.
