Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken at an abandoned mall/car gallery. We ventured down to underground level where there is this staircase behind with light spilling down from above.Time
We went to the ruin in morning of the day, as it gets very creepy later in the evening, we guessed it would be for the better to enter during day time. Even then, the underground level and some of the corners is especially dark and eerie.Lighting
I wanted this series of shoot to be generally dark with some natural lights spilling in. For this particular shot, I've use a strobe light to lit the foreground and the subject model to be more prevalent from the dark environment.Equipment
I was using Sony A6000 and Tokina 11-16mm for this shot, lighting is Godox AD600 with a large soft box plus grid attached.Inspiration
The main subject model is cosplaying as one character from a Japanese novel series, the theme surrounding this character is full of dynamics and action, which inspired and motivated me to recreate some similar mood following the original illustrations and fictions.Editing
I have made some basic exposure adjustments and curve adjustments in Lightroom, and local adjustment brushes to selectively darken the shadow and brighten up the subject areas. In my camera bag
Nowadays I usually bring my new Sony A7iii and a collection of lenses that cover the typical range I love to shoot with, such as Sony FE 85mm f/1.8, Olympus Zuiko 24mm, Tokina 11-16mm and other manual glasses that I use for fun occasionally. For lighting equipment I usually use my Godox AD600 and V850 flash.Feedback
Always scout ahead of the location if visiting abandoned site, and always go in group, watch out for any hazards as things can be potentially unsafe, although the environment will lend itself into the adrenaline filled mood.
