This photo was taken at a pier in Bokeelia, Florida. I am a self-taught photographer. Nature, landscapes, and macro work are my favorite subjects.Time
I had just finished learning about a new technique in Photoshop and couldn't wait to go out and catch some sunset photos. This was taken about an hour before the sunset in the middle of July. I did not use the technique I learned in PS for this photo, however. This one spoke for itself.Lighting
I opened my aperture as wide as I could. It was about an hour before sunset in the middle of summer in SW Florida- the land of never-ending summer and sunshine. It was still pretty bright out. I loved how blue this scene was. The reflection of the sky and clouds in the water, separated only by the pier and far off horizon made it look as if you were looking off "into the blue".Equipment
This was shot with a Canon Rebel T5, using an 18-55mm lens, F/5.6 ISO 400 SS 1/500 Focal Length 18/1. I did not have a tripod with me. It was a windy evening. I had to trust myself to hold steady to get a clear shot.Inspiration
I was waiting for the spectacular sunset show that SW Florida has to offer every evening. There were quite a few people already gathered on the public pier to the left of this photograph. The reflection of the sky and the loneliness of this private pier just screamed "photo op". I loved that being completely surrounded by many other people, this pier left in solitude, surrounded by the beauty of the sky reflected in the calm water.Editing
While most landscape photos can require a lot of processing, this photo did not. I simply upped the saturation and blues to get the look I saw with my human eyes. This is not exact, but fairly close. In my camera bag
I always carry my two kit lenses, 18-55mm 5.6 and 75-300mm 4-5.6, in addition to my 50mm 1.8 prime lens. I typically carry 2 extra batteries and 2 extra memory cards. There are some days I am gone all day long, photographing my entire day. One can never be too prepared.Feedback
Never underestimate the beauty of what's going on behind you during a sunset. While the sunset itself is spectacular, the beauty going on behind you is just as amazing. You'll capture what everyone else is missing. When you find that perfect pier, that beautiful blue sky, and that mirror of the calm water, open your aperture, let the light do the work for you, and shoot away.
