Behind The Lens

Location

Taken just south of Pullman, WA on Webber Road. This is the old "Webber home" on the Rolling Hills of the Palouse. We are famous for our dryland farming. Particularly for the wheat you see growing around the area of the home.

Time

Taken at around 11pm at night on the 2nd day of February, 2016. During the winter month with freezing fog setting in, the temperature on my car said -7 degrees Fahrenheit. We didn't get the meat of the milky way but the stars sure were out and with the moon helping us light paint the abandoned house.

Lighting

I used a EagleTac Light, small one with the 25 second exposure. It gave me time to snoot the light and bring it over my head. Then only placing light in the areas that needed it. A few trial and error from too bright to not enough light and bam... you eventually get the lighting that you love and want on only your subject. "Snooting the light" is when your cover the bottom have of the light with your hand or fingers to get a flat line that doesn't touch the foreground. The moon was out as well, helping me light paint.

Equipment

Nikon D750, Rokinon 14mm set to f2.8, ISO 3200, 25 second exposure, WB3900, EagleTac Light, no flash. tripod.

Inspiration

I had recently bought a full frame camera. This old home brought a sense of peace of mind from the past. Also it kind of sat well under the stars, an image not many photographers get of the famous Webber home in this area. I also was wanting an image with snow and the rolling hills, but couldn't get out while the snow was thick over ground. I got a partial of everything I wanted to capture but in time, I know I will return here with summer wheat growing and the meat of the Milky way bursting over sky.

Editing

A little bit of playing with the white balance and bringing down the high lights and up on shadows in some spots. Nearly nothing.

In my camera bag

I also carry a Nikor 85mm and 50mm f1.8. I also carry my old camera with me Nikon D5100. A few zoom lenses and a flash.

Feedback

Yes, try to start with the ISO at about 2500, WB of 3900, Exposure time of 20-25 seconds, f-stop at 2.8 or lower if possible. Shoot and play with ISO and exposure time. May need to make sure you find something in the day time to focus on that is setting your lens to "infinity focus". Mark it with a marker of some sort or tape so you can align up you at night, when your auto focus doesn't work. making sure you have nothing like your lens cap on and shoot away in to the distance. Check your composition with a couple of slop shots and lots of lighting practice as well going on.
