Behind The Lens

Location

I made photo of this kingfisher in Nin saltwork near Zadar (Croatia), where they usualy stay from September to May (Autumn, Winter and Spring time) every year.

Time

Early morning, during first rays of sun, first 2 hours are the best to catch nice warm and not to strong light.

Lighting

Best to use natural light from Sun. In the morning I use position to have nice light from Sun a bit from a side, and in afternoon I shoot in contralight on this position. Early in the morning the Sun is not so strung and colors are warm and stunning.

Equipment

I use Canon 6d, and mostly shoot kingfisher with Canon 400mm F2.8 L IS lens, rarely I use Canon 70-200 F2.8 L IS II. No flash, but tripod is as must, I have old Manfroto 055 PRO legs and Beike gimbal head.

Inspiration

I like the vivid colors on this birds, and nice position of bird during cleaning herself.

Editing

A bit of contrast, and crop above the bird. Exif ( Shutter 1/2500 f9 ISO 2000). With 6d when i have light there is no need to have noise reduction up ti ISO3200.

In my camera bag

The bag is quite large :) Two Canon 6D bodies, flash Canon 580 EXII, Canon 15mm fisheye, Canon 11-24mm F4L, Canon 50mm F1.4, Canon 17-40mm F4L, Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L IS II, macro lens Sigma 180mm f3.5, macro lens Canon 100mm f2.8, Canon 2X II extender, Macro rings. In other bag is my monster 400mm F2.8 L IS, probably my favorite lens :)

Feedback

Must make good covert to hide from bird, when you make shelter the best is to let bird to get used that the shelter is near. Usualy i make shelter 3 to 4 m from position where is kingfisher landing and catching fishes. and it is good to have long lens (300 to 400mm) Must be aware to have tight blend (around f9 to f16) to have all bird sharp cause it is quite close. IF you have good shelter and if you are quiet than you will have tons of this photos :)
