Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my friends house. We were on the balcony so we had beautiful natural light.

Time

It was about 4 or 5 PM when we took this picture.

Lighting

I wanted this photo to look a little bit mysterious so I wanted a few shadows on the corners of her face and I added a "barrier" between a viewer and a model and that barrier are pearls which reflect light also. I wanted for my model to look innocent at the first but if you look more closely you would see that this girl is more than that, that she is smart, witty and strong young woman and I accomplished that by adding sparkle in her eye and a little bit of light on her lips. She has awesome eyes and her look is something special! She can communicate with her eyes.

Equipment

I used Nikon D3000 and a 18-55mm lens. I used a reflector.

Inspiration

I read a couple of books before taking this photo about a mysterious women that were good and innocent but were powerful and strong. I wanted to show by my photographs what I imagined while reading those books.

Editing

I had a lot of luck with this model. She has perfect skin and she knows how to do her make up right so I have not had a lot of job in post-processing. I removed a couple of pimples, I used curves, played with colors and made her eye pop up by sharpening it a little bit and adding shadows to it.

In my camera bag

I am an amateur photographer and a student so I don't have a lot of equipment. I have Nikon D3000, Nikkor 50mm AF-S and Nikkor 18-55mm AF-S lenses. Those are always in my bag. I sometimes bring with me flash, reflector or ring-light.

Feedback

Natural light is the best! I like to make a studio outside when I am photographing. My backdrop would be a white wall or something else. Be creative and explore. This photo was taken on balcony but it doesn't look like it was taken there. Just try new stuff. Use reflector for sparkle in eyes. I used pearls to add some story to my picture but you can use anything else. You can use flowers or lace or curtain.... Just explore and have fun!
