Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during a trip to Dubai in January a couple of years ago on top of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. It is taken from the highest viewing platform, which, much to my disappointment, was not quite at the top of the building.

Time

The photo was taken at night time. After a misty day we were lucky that the cloud cover had opened up in the evening providing us with amazing views over the illuminated city and onto the top of the Burj Khalifa.

Lighting

The moonlight beautifully illuminated the clouds and the façade of the building that evening.

Equipment

The photo was taken with my Canon EOS 650D. I did not have a tripod with me that day, so the photo is taken with a hand held camera with a 1/100 shutter speed and an aperture of f3.5.

Inspiration

As an architect, being able to visit the tallest building in the world was a very special experience which I wanted to capture in this photo.

Editing

No post-processing was done for this image.

In my camera bag

I always have my Samsung Galaxy S6 with me, which takes amazing photos and has so many features that allow to manually manipulate lighting and focus. When I go out to take photos I bring my Canon EOS 650D with a Tamron Zoom lens (18 to 300mm), which gives me a lot of flexibility and allows to adapt quickly between different scenes, albeit having to accept that the quality suffers a little in terms of clarity of the image.

Feedback

Its not always possible to set up a tripod for night time shoots (especially not on a busy viewing platform with only an allocated timeslot shared with many other people). My canon EOS 650D has several features which allow taking hand held night time photos.
