Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken just few minutes away from my home in Iceland, city Reykjavik. In Iceland we don't have alot of wooded area but I'm so lucky that I live close to my favorite outside area Heidmork.

Time

This was taken in the afternoon around 3pm icelandic time and in winter. During winter season in Iceland we got few hours of daylight and I try to use every opportunity to photograph before darkness. This time there was raining and snow was melting away, the weather condition for photography have been terrible this winter so I just grapped my gear, called few phonecalles and ran out so I wouldn´t miss the light.

Lighting

The light of this scene was very little but was definitely what I was hoping for, mysterious, darkness and a little bit of backlight. As in winter time we got only like 4 hours of daylight so there's not much to choose from :). The light is as natural as it gets.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D7000 and my 50mm lens, I took my reflector with me but there was no need for it.

Inspiration

It was absolutely the light and the weather and of course the place that pushed my buttons to go out. The months before this shoot it had been snowing and constantly bad weather. The kind a weather I couldn't dare to go out, meters of snowpiles all over. As soon as the rain came and started to wash away the snow I thought to myself "better get ready cos the time will come that I can grabb my things and go out to photograph in a hurry. I had already picked this place in my mind so I was preperd.

Editing

I take all my photos in raw and then I hand edit them in photoshop, highlights, shadows, and everything I need to make my story complete, and make everyone see what I see.

In my camera bag

My camera of course, 2 lenses, 50mm snd a zoom lense 70-300, speedlightflash, filters and reflector. Alsi I brong my tripod in cas I need it.

Feedback

1) Just use the light in any weather conditions when you can, even if it is raining the light can be beautiful and a lot of mysteri with it. 2) Look around you, there might be that perfect place just around the cornor that you can use to photograph. Go and take a tour around your neighborhood, scan it, take notes. 3) Clothing for photographing children is important as the light. You got to have your mind made up before you go out about clothing. 4) Always be prepeard for anything, have your bag, equippments ready in time or at all times. Be prepeard for any weather conditions :).
