Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken October 2014 on the Annapurna base camp trek in Nepal. This view is looking back from MBC camp at 3700m.

Time

This was taken shortly after we arrived at camp. We had just treked through a small snow storm and this was just after the cloud had cleared. Taking a moment to reflect on when we had come from.

Lighting

This was a perfect moment where the whole valley was in optimal lighting. No extra lighting aids were used to capture this shot.

Equipment

I took this photo with my Canon Markiii and 24-70 2.8 lens

Inspiration

Inspiration to take photos is everywhere you look in Nepal , this photo however, captured a moment that I was in absolute awe about how far we had treked. I also loved the perspective I could capture here, with the small hut I'm the bottom left quarter you can appreciate the sheer size of the mountains. I had a huge sense of accomplishment is where we had come from.

Editing

I did minimal post processing in this shot. I like to keep the colours as true as possible. I mainly just adjusted the highlights (turned them down slightly)as the snow as very bright, also made the blacks a little blacker added some clarity and some exposure, half a stop.

In my camera bag

The main equipment I carry with me is my mark iii, 50mm 1.4 and 24-70 2.8. I also carry a flash however seldom use it as I like to keep my shots as natural and as true to what I see as possible.

Feedback

Key points to remember if you are trying to capture an image similar to this would be balancing the foreground and the background to give a sense of perspective or incorporating another object in the vicinity such as the hut in this instance to give good perspective. The presence of good natural light. Placement of the leading lines is also important and is what draws your eye into this image. Being in a very a breath taking setting such as this also helps.
