This photo was taken at Woolacombe beach Devon one of the best south west surf spots in England this is probably one of my best wave shots to date.Time
I needed to get the tide just right for the best wave just after the water hit the sand bar so the wave would peak and fold over to form the tube ok so its not Hawaii !!!. The time was around midday on a very cold overcast March day with rain and sea spray in the air not so good for my kit.Lighting
Well not much to say about lighting it's mid March in north Devon gray cold dull there was just a slim line of sunlight out to sea just to light up the back of the wave i think that helped in the shotEquipment
I used a Nikon D300 and Sigma 300mm F2.8 lens on a old tripod that i have had for years the salt water is slowly eating into it.Inspiration
I started out as a surf photographer and did well out of it for years i live only a 5 min drive from the best surfing beaches in north Devon so i get to see the sea every day and you see how it can change over the year what inspired me to to take the shot was how the wind was blowing the crest from the top and the green and blue water of the wave.Editing
I did have to do a lot of processing with this image i had to make sure i didn't over do thing i shoot Raw so i had lots to play with to get the end imageIn my camera bag
I shoot a wide range of images from Property,Weddings,Wildlife,Landscape,Underwater,Sports,if i think it looks like a good image i will shoot it so i need lots of kit Nikon D3s Nikon D800 Nikon D300 Nikon 10.5mm 50mm 14-24mm 24-70mm 70-200mm Sigma 300mm Lee filters Nikon SB600 SB800 SP900 the one thing i use all the time is my Color Checker Passport great bit of kit to add to your kit bag.Feedback
My advice if you are looking to have a go at a shot like this or close to water is think about it first don't put yourself in danger around water !! Go to a beach that the surfers surf at look at how the wave breaks if you find a beach with a reef better still as the wave will break in the same spot over the reef then look for a safe spot to shoot from left or right of the peak so you can shoot the tube as it forms.
