Location
I took this picture in the west part of Iceland, moss on old lava field - "Grábrókarhraun" it is called in Icelandic. The picture is of my wife, opera singer Alexandra Chernyshova. I took theTime
The picture was taken 22th of September 2013 when the autumn colours are at its best. I took the picture at 17:30 in the afternoon and the sun was getting low on the sky. It was rather warm day in Iceland and the sun shining, getting close to sunset.Lighting
Sunset in Iceland and autumn colours are very beautiful and using soft flash against the sun gives the model beautiful and soft light to fill up the shadows.Equipment
I used Canon 5DM3, 70-200mm I IS f/2.8 lens, free flash and a softball - my son was holding the flash tripod. Settings for the shot: f/6.3 - 70mm - iso 100 - speed 1/200.Inspiration
I have a beautiful wife and she is a opera singer, therefor she needs different kind of pictures to promote her. We like to take pictures in the nature, Icelandic nature is great with all kinds of contrast - waterfalls, lava, sunset, black beaches, glacier lagoons and mountains. We saw this day that the circumstances for photo shot would be good, the photo location is only 40 min away from our home.Editing
I used photoshop for post processing, I did not do very much for this picture - added some contrast and made the foreground little bit darker. In my camera bag
I have in my bag canon 5DM3, three canon lenses 50mm f/2.8, 16-35mm II f/2.8 for landscape and northern lights and 70-200mm IS f/2.8. I have also a lot of Lee filters for the landscape and sunset photos. Then I have canon speed light 500 and a manfrotto tripod.Feedback
I am no specialist in this kind of photo shot, me and my wife like to try different things and as a long as we are inventive and spontaneous we usually get interesting result. Playing with light and using the sunlight can be difficult, to much sun gives sometime to hard light and shadows but using softbox and flash against the sun gives nice fill and soft light on the model. Don't be afraid of making mistakes, look at pictures other photographers made and try use some of that knowledge to do your own thing.
