Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made in a set up in my back yard that is dedicated to the birds. In Michigan the Humming birds are here for the summer so I make more time to focus on these little birds.

Time

This photo was shot late afternoon. I found that they pick the time and witch feeder to use. Time of day is usually set by the birds that where I have no control

Lighting

The time of day varying, the trees the feeders are under help to diffuse the light to make it more appealing.

Equipment

Canon EOS Rebel T7i w/ 150-600mm contemporary at 600mm, gimbal head on the tripod.

Inspiration

These little speed demons have always been one of my favorite little birds. So when I saw that they were coming in I set up and waited.

Editing

I always try to keep the post to a minimum. I find that it is best for me to do that because it is to easy to over do. Make the photo the best you can at the time of capture and you will be more happy with it. So usually it's just adjusting light and shadows a little bit and maybe a crop if needed.

In my camera bag

With being in my own yard it isn't necessary to have a lot with me. Once I'm set up that is usually all I need. If I'm out on a shoot I will take at least three lenes polarizers, extra batteries, tripod with gimbal and then just a few things to keep things clean.

Feedback

Bird capture is more of a waiting game. Find the spot that seems to be the best composition and wait. Always stay alert birds work on there time not ours. Make sure to plan ahead, decide if you want them in flight or perched, there is no time to change once the subjects arrive. The settings vary accordingly. In flight use high shutter speeds and pick an f stop to give the background blur you want then float ISO ( use ISO on auto) I find this works most of the time for me. Most of all shoot pictures, if you don't you won't find what works best for you. Just remember we all learn something new every time we go on a new adventure.
