Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in my natural light studio at the Collingwood Arts Center, an 1854 Convent and Girls school converted into artist space.

Time

This studio image was shot late morning in November of 2018. I remember that we shot 4-5 hours in a combination of studio and natural lighting sessions, and this was one of our early images.

Lighting

I prefer a good mix of shadow in my images. I often adjust my lighting as the model moves around in my desire to perfect the lighting on the female curve.

Equipment

I was shooting Nikon D750's. I love my 70-200 F2.8 VR 1 and use it for much of my photography. The combination is incredibly sharp and provides the individual hair and skin texture for my style. Lighting is simple 30x60 Buff softbox mounted on a Alienbee 800.

Inspiration

Sienna has some of the best vintage/classic curves in a model today. I was looking for a classic pose focused on her hourglass curve and beautiful hair. We played with about 4-5 trials of this pose, and she hit it perfectly with a slight left lean and hip push really catching the light.

Editing

Very little processing on this image. I use Photoshop CS6. NIK presharpener, light skin smoothing, and a minor sepia finish.

In my camera bag

I am a glass guy demanding maximum sharpness. I always carry my 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8, and supplement with my new favorite Nikkor 58mm f1.4 and 85mm 1.4. Current bodies are Nikon D750s.

Feedback

I started in the business shooting film. 35mm and medium format. I learned back then of the benefit of getting it right ...in camera, the first time. I own 2 studios, one of which I provide rental time to other photographers. I see so many photogs today shooting rapidly with the hopes of capturing something that can be edited later. Slow down, look at the light across the entire image, sweat the small details, and create some art.
